Books

  1. A Practical Guide to SysML by S. Friedenthal, et al.
    • Editors' Rating:
    • PRO: Most comprehensive book on SysML to date. Good introduction to SysML behavioral modeling.
    • CON: Writing and example quality are uneven and inconsistent, likely the result of multiple authors. Although the book purports to be pragmatic, most of the examples tend to be simplistic or academic. Relatively weak on structural modeling. Fails to address model integrity and model scalability issues in a convincing manner. Includes excessive method (OOSEM) propaganda that detracts from the main subject.
  2. Systems Engineering with SysML/UML by T. Weilkins
    • Editors' Rating:
    • PRO: Attempts to show how both UML and its SysML dialect can be used to specify systems engineering applications.
    • CON: Model examples for both languages tend to be simplistic or academic. Largely ignores model integrity and scalability issues. Terminology definitions are superficial and frequently circular.
  3. SysML for Systems Engineering by J. Holt, et al.
    • Editors' Rating: N/A

Online Tutorials

  • OMG SysML Tutorial
    • INCOSE tutorial presentation that contains a lot of SysML standardization information. Last updated June 2008.
    • Editors' Rating:
    • PRO: Provides quick introduction to SysML and covers all major diagram types and constructs.
    • CON: Includes too much specification trivia that lacks pragmatic value. Assumes that the reader is already familiar with visual modeling in general, and UML 2 in particular, so this tutorial is inappropriate for a novice.
